What did she do out there?
She worked as an English language teaching assistant.
What were your main concerns?
Well, the fact it's a foreign country that wasn't easily accessible for us if she were to get in trouble, as neither of us had passports.
What did you do to try and cope with her year abroad?
We had plenty of contact via email and phone calls.
What advice would you give to parents in a similar situation?
Trust your child, keep in touch and TRY not to worry too much.
In hindsight, do you think you were right to worry as much as you did?
Not in the least, however isn’t it the job of a parent to worry?
Is there anything you feel you could have done differently?
It would have been nice to actually visit where my child was going.
Would you recommend a year abroad for students?
Definitely. I think they gain so much from it and will also increase their knowledge of the language and lifestyle.
How do you think your daughter benefited from a year abroad?
I think she has benefited from it bcause she has been to places and even countries she would not normally see, as well as gaining (I hope) more knowledge in her language studies.
How do you think you benefited from her year abroad?
I would say we’ve learned that she is actually an adult and can cope away from home without having her parents on standby at the drop of a hat.
Would you like your child to do it again?
Only if she wanted to. I wouldn’t encourage her to go again but wouldn’t be worried at the thought of her going away for quite a long period of time.
