  • Culture Shock: Austria

Written by  Antonia Storey Sunday, 23 January 2011

    1. Was mach’n?
Nothing prepares you for the German they speak in Austria.  Having spent my year abroad in Tirol, I now joke I speak Tirolean rather than German because they are two entirely different languages.  The first time someone opens their mouth and exclaims “isch mia wurscht” you will wonder where the hell you are and why on earth you chose to come here and you probably won’t figure out the answer to that question until you’re sitting in your first language class back at university and you can understand everything that people say in Hoch Deutsch but they have no understanding of your dialect whatsoever.  Understanding Austrian German is a huge advantage for the future and it’s something you just cannot pick up from a textbook.

  • City of the Alternative
The architecture of this sizeable city reflects a varied and colourful past, and matches the city's vibrant atmosphere. Slightly smaller than its cousin Vienna, Graz is packed with museums, galleries and cultural centres. Being less overwhelming than the capital, Graz also boasts its fair amount of green spaces—notably the Botanischer Garten, Graz's answer to Kew Gardens; refreshing to see some greenery in what can only be described as a mish-mash of a town.
  • City of Culture
By far the largest city in the country (1.7 million live, breathe and sleep in the Habsburg birthplace), Vienna ticks all the boxes in terms of imperial nostalgia, turn-of-last century culture, and all things majestic. Impressive baroque buildings dispute themselves across the city, and on every corner, every turn, a passer-by can only be in awe of the many architectural delights scattered throughout.

  • Student accommodation in Austria

Written by  Natacha Cullinan Wednesday, 13 July 2011
Thinking about spending your time abroad in Austria? Don’t know where to start when it comes to accommodation? Check out these websites!

    • If you’re studying, check out student halls with the OEAD
    • If you’re looking to rent independently, check out GabinoHome
    • If you’re looking to share, check out Craig’s List and EasyWG
    • Find out if you can get financial help with the OEAD
  • City of the Contemporary
An industrial city which, at first glance, can seem a little grey and not very exciting for a year abroad destination... but the old saying 'don't judge an Austrian city by how many pretty buildings it's got' is exactly what you should be going by!

  • City of the Outdoors
Looked at a map of Austria and thought snow was more your thing? Then look no further than Innsbruck, home to the alpine fanatics out there! In every photo and every film, you cannot take your eyes off the snowy peaks creeping up behind the town's urban facade.
  • City of Musical Glitterati
Nestling on the border of Germany, to the West of the country, Salzburg offers more than just the backdrop for The Sound of Music. Birthplace to none other than the king of (classical) pop, Mozart, the city is beaming with baroque buildings, exterior wooden beams, and traditional shops (think chocolates, mini liqueurs and a lot of cute decorum). You'll be taken by the urge to sip on a thick hot chocolate, after a little escapade in the surrounding mountains. For the historians out there amongst you, take a tour around the impressive Hohensalzburg medieval castle, a grand fortress that highlights just one of Austria's many UNESCO world heritage sites.
