  • The debate surrounding the Spanish tradition of bullfighting is one that continues to polarise, dividing people between those who see it as an antiquated custom that glorifies the torture of animals, and those who consider it simply as part of the country’s history and culture, with very little grey area in between. As a student on a year abroad in Madrid, a bullfight was high on my to-do list when I moved here. I wasn’t being naïve: I knew what the night would entail, but I thought the only way I could have an opinion on the topic was to experience it first hand, so fuelled by a ‘when in Rome’ mentality, last weekend I attended a bullfight at Madrid’s Plaza de Toros de las Ventas.

  • 5 Awkward Besito Moments

    Monday, 11 March 2013

Why is Spain in a crisis? What is this ‘siesta’ nonsense? Why is the Mercadona jingle so catchy? These were just some of the seemingly unanswerable questions I asked myself when I started my Year Abroad in Spain five months ago, but perhaps the most pressing question, and the one that required the most urgent response, was: when is it socially/morally/ethically acceptable to give a besito?

  • My top Spanish festivals

    Sunday, 08 July 2012
A great thing to do on your year abroad is to travel around the country that you’re in, and more often than not you will have a friend/someone from your university who you can visit or travel with. Spain’s days off and puentes (equivalent to the British bank holiday) are normally thanks to a religious festival. Each region, town and village has a patron saint, and they all celebrate in different ways.

  • Alanna is studying French and Spanish at Nottingham Trent University and is spending her year abroad as an Erasmus student. Her first semester was in Strasbourg, France, and she is now in León, Spain, which she chose because it’s not as touristy as other cities and she thought she'd have a better chance of improving her Spanish and seeing the ‘real’ Spain. Here she describes a typical week in her life...

  • The Sounds of Spain

    Thursday, 18 April 2013

For those of you who have recently received an acceptance letter to study in Spain, you’re probably already daydreaming about la vida loca that awaits you: a new world where the hardest decision will be which tapas to accompany your glass of sangria, sunbathing on a beach as the sounds of flamenco and salsa music float through the air. For the most part, you won’t be disappointed. However, what the study abroad brochure fails to mention is that your year abroad will be soundtracked by the worst kind of music, that your favourite band would never dream of touring Spain… but also, that the music festivals back at home have been ripping you off for years.

  • Spain....the beginning...

    Saturday, 11 February 2012
So I’ve been terrible at blogging during my time in France. I don’t know what to put it down to really. There was a lot of work in the last few months and preparing for exams was pretty stressful. None of us had any idea how we were going to do or what the exams would be like. Luckily I’ve now got my marks back and am happy to say I passed everything fine. I have to say though; exams in France were pretty strange. The exam conditions were not strict at all which was something very new for me. The exams themselves  were a little strange, for example for one of my literature modules, despite studying more than one book, we only got one question, on one book. No choice at all. Luckily, I’d studied all the books really well so didn’t have a problem but am glad I didn’t use that tactic which I think is sometimes employed in England, where you hedge your bets and just study some of the texts well and not all of them.
