We give you the lowdown on year abroad insurance - what to look out for, how to avoid nasty surprises and make sure you’re suited and booted to experience a great year abroad, minus the incomprehensible legal jargon!
  • Some universities give out insurance cover to their year abroad students. Just think what this means for you for a second...
  • Why you should consider study abroad insurance

It’s essential you give travel insurance serious consideration; be it to insure your personal belongings, cover yourself for personal liability, or to ensure you can get the right medical help if something were to happen to you, amongst a list of many other scenarios that are all too common for student travellers. Some universities may offer a form of free insurance, yet most do not cover you for working abroad or personal liability. Make sure you know the score and check your insurance policy boasts at least all of the following benefits, should the situation arise:
  • Heck, insurance. That old chestnut. Although insurance (Lat., noun, singular: *yawn*) is not as exciting as say, scuba-diving in the Indian Ocean, or climbing up a 1,000 year old tree in the Amazon, or even going shopping on your favourite street in Paris, it is something you will most definitely need on a year or semester abroad. Your parents/university have probably warned you about it already, and you most probably haven’t got round to sorting it out yet (if your university offer free insurance, make sure it covers all your plans). And then you researched it, and it turns out there's a lot of jargon and a lot of stuff you're not sure you should be covered for... or maybe you should?! Luggage, repatriation, theft - sounds like a recipe for disaster! It doesn't have to be, if you look out for these selling points...

  • Why you should buy your Year Abroad Insurance early

Written by  Richard from YearAbroadInsurance.com Sunday, 20 May 2012
We know that getting insurance to cover your year abroad activities is really important – not simply because of all the unforeseen events which can happen, but because your year abroad is a nerve-wracking prospect and having good insurance cover will help you relax and focus on important things like finding somewhere to live, booking your flights and organising a pre-year abroad trip to explore your new country.

We asked Richard from YearAbroadInsurance.com to explain why it’s such a good idea to buy year abroad insurance before you buy anything else…
  • Taking out Year Abroad insurance is essential to any trip abroad, be it for one semester or a whole year... Some policies give you the option of taking out year-long insurance, some offer up to 18 months of cover so you can include your holidays before and after, whereas others may offer a month rollover scheme. Consequently fees do vary, so it’s best to make a list of things you’re after before you choose your policy.
  • Breaking a leg - literally, and abroad

    Written by  Rachel German
Quite literally. What not to do on a year abroad...What happened to me didn’t actually happen on a year abroad, it was actually my gap year. I think you’ll find the situation could arise regardless though...

I was 18 and had decided against going straight to uni, instead choosing to work and then go somewhere far flung and exotic. Thus, I found myself boarding a plane one rainy morning in January 2005 for Madrid and then Quito, Ecuador. I went with one of those organisations that you pay to volunteer for, something I wouldn’t really do now for money reasons, but can be quite reassuring in terms of in-country help and support.
  • Accidents Abroad

Written by  Sophie Genge, Travel law team, Penningtons Solicitors LLP Saturday, 02 January 2010

The thing students dread most is having an accident on their year abroad. In the event that something does go wrong you will want to make sure that it will be dealt with causing you as little hassle as possible. Increasingly, it has been noticed that students taking gap years do not always have adequate insurance cover when they go abroad. Not only can this leave them out of pocket, it can also make it very difficult to bring a claim on their behalf.
