  • The Year Abroad Checklist

    Monday, 14 June 2010
Some of these may sound basic, but after many a silly story heard from Year Abroad Grads, we thought we’d give you a heads up on what to do:

    1. Take note of important telephone numbers—this roughly translates as home (and if applicable, foreign) universities, organisations (British Council, Erasmus, host company etc...), your home GP, your bank’s stolen cards line and insurance claims hotline.

Finding a partner during your time away is possibly the safest ticket to fluency known to man. You'll learn more about the country, the culture, the love-bird expressions (even if you choose not to use them - 'mi querido pastelito' anyone? That's 'darling little cupcake' to anyone not studying Spanish or Soppynish), in fact, at the very least, you're going to learn a whole sub-language through text messages and emails (only ask trusted friends to translate these). You'll find yourself picking up all your partner's little vocal tics too, which will make you sound more fluent. Having someone whisper seductive things in your ear in French, Spanish or Italian is great. German, less so.

  • It has come to my attention that as I am finishing my Year Abroad, many of you will be embarking upon yours. Be prepared for a crazy year, full of incredibly good times, new friends and amazing experiences. However it will also be one of the most challenging years you’ve ever had. So I’ve decided to put together a little dummy’s guide, with helpful tips on the things I found the most difficult during my work placement in Paris and Erasmus semester in Rome.

  • Thousands of students each year have to make that all important decision on their year out/abroad: to work or to study? Such an important decision requires thought, research and a lot of preparation. Would you prefer to study a different course/module when out there? Maybe a niche school, such as theatre or music conservatories are more up your street? Maybe your CV's looking a little shabby and you fancy adding some all important skills to it? Either way, you're bound to get something out of it, but just what that something really is, is down to you.

  • It is completely natural for you to worry about your little ones as they jet off to the other side of the world. With limited communication methods and foreign office guidelines sending you up the wall with panic, you have nightmares of kidnappings and muggings and no way of reaching your baby to keep them safe and sound, as well as keeping you abreast with their new life out there. Or maybe they haven't actually got round to planning anything yet and you're fretting that – horror of horrors - they'll end up living at home for the next year.

  • Of course taking a year abroad requires a good deal of planning and preparation but don't let that put you off as you could be embarking on the experience of a lifetime. Travel plans, insurance, finances, paperwork and accommodation are all important considerations and may seem daunting if you have never done anything like this before, particularly on your own. Always take out adequate insurance before you go as an accident without proper insurance in place will inevitably be much worse to sort out, both financially and emotionally. Choose your insurance policy carefully - don't just take the cheapest one on offer and make sure you will be covered for the most dangerous type of activity you might wish to take part in.

  • In all honesty, there will be times on your Year Abroad where you just want to curl up in a ball and teleport back to your nice comfy bed back home. There will be times when you find yourself  hastily searching for flights, trains, ferries, Eurostars, anything to take you back home, to somewhere where you feel secure, organised, in control and, above all, at home. There will be times where you consider emailing your university and saying look, I just can’t do this (you can, by the way!). Finally, there will be times when you doubt your progress.

  • After a fabulously loved up pit stop in England between the two halves of my year abroad, I have set sail (or flight) to the lovely city of Rome. The second half of my year will be spent here in the Italian capital where I am embarking on an Erasmus exchange at the unbelievably disorganised Roman university, La Sapienza.

Counting coppers: advice on how to fund a year away

As tantalizing as the prospect of spending a year abroad may be, the one thing you have to do before anything else, is to work out how exactly you’re going to cover your overall expenses whilst you’re out there. From your tuition fees and accommodation to food, book supplies, clothes and travel; you’ll soon see that once you tot up all your bills, it really adds up. Although the UK government has pledged to make educational loans and grants transferable, this has not yet come into effect. Here are several options which could help you finance your study abroad, whether you’re a language student or looking to find something to do as part of a sandwich course. Just have a look at our suggestions for racking in those pounds...
