  • Career ammunition for language graduates

    Wednesday, 13 February 2013

As a business which works with year abroad students, we are constantly hearing stories about how important the year abroad and foreign language skills are for your graduate career prospects. It's when employers start talking about "the lack of linguistic graduates in the UK" that it gets really interesting. You are a linguistic graduate! You are a valuable commodity! You need to understand that with a grasp of a foreign language or an inside knowledge of another culture, you are in a position to approach employers speculatively and offer your services to help them develop new business in those geographical areas.

Are you a graduate who has an interesting job which uses your language skills? Could your experience inspire young people to continue their language learning?

  • There are some things which are the same for a CV in most countries. As in the UK, you should try and restrict the length to just one page. To help with this when you begin to write, format the blank page as effectively as possible. Additionally, if you really want to target a specific employer with an application, you need to produce a cover letter (une letter de motivation) detailing why you would be suitable for the job and outlining where you saw the job advertised. Here are some tips for how to produce a CV and lettre de motivation in French, in a typical French layout.
