  • We know that for your year abroad work placement you are looking for: 1) a salary which will support you to live abroad, 2) a job which includes something more interesting than photocopying and coffee-making, 3) an opportunity to develop your language skills, and 4) a CV boost. That's fair enough! So you need to 1) forget the words 'work experience' and 'unpaid internship', 2) think positive and remember you have a lot to offer a company, and 3) up your game. Here's our advice...

  • On top of the university travel grants, Erasmus grants and Student Finance loan available to you, there are other ways which will assist you to cover the costs associated with studying, working or researching abroad. Here's a list - which will be kept updated - of scholarships, awards and fellowships you can apply for.

    Are you a graduate who has an interesting job which uses your language skills? Could your experience inspire young people to continue their language learning?

    We're working with the European Commission to video interview people from a broad range of careers based in London (for logistical reasons) where language skills and studying/working abroad have helped them get their jobs. If you'd like to be involved, please fill in the form below and if you fulfil our criteria we'll be in touch :)
  • Tom Adams is the Chairman of the Board for Rosetta Stone, having joined the company as CEO in 2003. He was named the Ernst & Young 'Entrepreneur of the Year' in 2009 and SmartCEO 'CEO of the Year' 2009. A native of Sweden, Tom grew up in France and England and is fluent in French, Swedish, English, and Spanish. He has a working knowledge of German and Chinese and is currently in the process of learning Russian.

    I recently had the chance to speak to Tom for the brief 'Last Word' of my Languages and Entrepreneurship report, but his answers are so brilliant that I thought it would be useful to transcribe the interview in full...
