What an exciting start to the week! ThirdYearAbroad.com won its place as one of Smarta's 100 most exciting, promising, disruptive new businesses, by 'spotting a good gap in the market' and 'making the important process of learning a language easier and more appealing for young people'. We're all very pleased, and still working really hard to try and make the site as useful as possible for all travelling types! We've currently added some crucial case studies, so have a look at our 'Been there, done that!' section and have a read through real stories - you never know, some of them might sway your plans of where to go for your overseas adventure! We'd love to get some feedback from our visitors, so do get in touch and let us know what you think! TYA's founder, Lizzie, has also had the pleasure of being interviewed by School for Startups this week (set up by ex-Dragon Doug Richard) so read the article to find out where it all began...

If you’re thinking of escaping to Europe for your third year, you better make sure you’ve got some stories to tell when you get back. You can get from Paris to Venice in just over 9 hours, and considering the high standard of European railways, you’d be mad to miss out on opportunities like these!
1. At home you relied on your parents for sustenance and in halls you lived off the calories in the alcohol, but if you’re travelling abroad, you need to know how to handle yourself in the kitchen.

We're here to help you make the most of your year abroad; the most worthwhile thing you'll do this decade.*

We set sail (or, rather, jumped onto the Eurostar) for a speedy visit to Paris - city of students and student fairs! French student magazine, L'Etudiant, were fronting a huuuuuuge fair for students planning trips, studies and/or work placements abroad. We thought we should get in on some French knor-how too! Boy was it useful, we rubbed shoulders with Jim Hollington, Deputy Director for the British Council in France, Helena Mazo, Head of the Spanish department at International House Madrid, as well as many other interesting people!

We've been massively supported by LAUNCH.ed over the years, and they invited us up to Edinburgh to see them and exhibit in their show of companies set up over 40 years of research, innovation and entrepreneurialism at the university. The exhibition included inspiring companies like VLSI Vision who developed the mobile phone camera, and startup internet businesses like Hubdub where you can bet on the outcome of news stories. We had a great time up north – especially as we got to meet the Duke of Edinburgh! His response to TYA was "Why don't they just use travel agents??!" Darn it. Never thought of that.
