Survey: Who inspired you to learn new languages?

Saturday, 19 May 2012
Unless you're lucky enough to have grown up in a multilingual environment, you probably started learning a foreign language as part of the national curriculum. Perhaps French, German or Spanish lessons were scheduled on your Year 7 timetable. In some cases, you may have chosen your foreign language from a list of options. How did you decide which one to go for? Where did you turn for advice?
Even when our first foreign language lessons are thrust upon us, our decision to study a second or third language is usually more complex. We are all inspired by those around us and the desire to communicate in a particular language is often instilled by other people.

From now until mid-June, the European Commission's DG Interpretation is conducting a survey on what inspires young people to learn languages. Maybe your Dad told you German would be good for business or your Granny persuaded you to learn French? At any rate we would love to hear from you!

The survey will take less than five minutes of your time, and your answers will help us to promote language learning in the UK while raising awareness about the interpreting and translation jobs available in Brussels. To take part today, please click here.

You are also very welcome to help us by spreading the word on your Facebook page or other networks. Here is the link to the survey on our Facebook page.
