  • I am so excited that ThirdYearAbroad.com has sponsored the 'unexpected' category of the 2010-11 Year Abroad Photo Competition. I think all the categories (including 'people' and 'places') epitomise the year abroad, but 'unexpected' most of all; not simply because of the untapped personal skills and coping mechanisms you discover while you're away, but the cultural surprises - the things you never expected you would do or see, let alone capture on film! The winning photographs encapsulate adventure and spontaneity, and that is not only how to make the most of your year abroad, but how to take the very best photographs. Congratulations to Laura and Rachel!

At Bristol, year abroad students are allowed to:

    1. Study
    i) At a university on an Erasmus exchange programme or
ii) On a university-based foreign language school
    2. Work as a language teaching assistant on the British Council Assistantship programme or on the Comenius scheme
    3. Undertake a work placement or training scheme that has been approved by the International Office. This may entitle you to an Erasmus grant.

    City of the Alternative

Tucked away in Somerset is the colourful and alternative city of Bristol, the fourth largest city in England. Once you’ve come to terms with the endless hills (trainers are a must, as are boots), you’ll make the most of living in this thriving and continually happening city. An impeccable student town with loads of interesting locals, you’ll be forever amazed at its village-like appearance. Whether you’re in need of some greenery, looking for one-of-a-kind shops, fancy eateries, street art (thank you, Banksy) or modern architecture, Bristol is sure to keep your pulse racing with things to do.

  • Running a photography competition for the Year Abroad is something we highly recommend - after all, a little competition for the year abroad can only be a good thing! If anything, it encourages students to really get to know their chosen destination, see it in a different light and capture it an instant. Remembering your year abroad, be it through notes, drawings, videos or photos comes in handy when you want to reminisce over times past (especially as you’re cracking on with finals!). It can also become very useful once you graduate, showing potential employers, students and contemporaries what you achieved when you were out there.

Bristol, UK - arty, friendly, bohemian, pretty, urban

Bristol has tons to offer, whether you're working or studying. Bristol University is really central and is housed in some of the finest buildings in the city, whilst UWE (University of the West of England) has a really friendly vibe; so many students running around the city means there's loads of cute places to have a snack in, tons of bars with cheap student deals and fantastic shopping to be done! You can take your pick from the cool, alternative shops on Park Street, or down in the newly refurbished city centre, with a load of high street chains and some one-off superstores. I really loved the buildings, which looked a bit like nearby Bath, but also the fact that there was always something to do, as Bristol offers a really lively cultural calendar. Bars and clubs have all sorts of music, from folk to pop to jazz to dubstep, you can't go wrong with the food bars scattered across the Triangle and Park Street. The universities themselves are also very prestigious and there's loads of foreign students walking about, so you won't feel too out of place, yet you'll find it really easy to make friends with British students as there's so many societies on offer!
