Eclectic Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland, UK - small, pretty, rain, strong sense of Scottish pride, colourful

It's quite small and is basically split into two halves: the Old Town (Medieval) and the New Town (Georgian). You can get anywhere in 15 minutes walk and the city is really worth travelling around on foot - it's really pretty and quaint. The castle is the main attraction at the top of the Royal Mile, with the Grass Market also offering itself up as a popular second choice. The buskers here are bag-pipe players! There's a strong sense of culture and pride, lots of Scottish memorabilia and tartan stuff. It's generally very safe, you can walk back home from clubs no problem. One thing not to miss is... The Edinburgh festival! Loads of people arrive and rent flats during this period and the atmosphere's really electric, with tons of art and culture to make the most of. Edinburgh has that capital city buzz, a bit like London, except on a smaller scale (and with a Scottish accent). Lots of Irish pubs populate the city ( the Scots and Irish must have a secret alliance). And the country even has its own Scottish bank notes!

The University: Lots and lots of students bring a youthful buzz to the city. As the university is not on a campus, it's spread over the city in all the grand buildings in the Old Town. Edinburgh is also a student-friendly city. The university has a good reputation, with a strong credibility and its prestige and age make it well-established amongst the top British universities. The Art College (where I'm studying) is also part of the Uni and has a brilliant sculpture court where Art is constantly being exhibited. There's a really great sense of community within the College of Art.

Favourite places

To eat: Bar Kohl, the Outsider, the Villager, Biblos, Pizza Express, Made in Italy, Gusto's, I could go on with this subject!

For drinks: Bar Kohl, 99 Hanover Street, Grand Cru, Tiger Lilly.

To go out: Lulu's, Opal Lounge, Baraca, City, Cav.

Useful local words: Smirring - spitting with rain, that's me/you - when you've arrived somewhere, aye - yes, wee - small/bit.
What not to pack: Sun cream, a city map (give up, it's too hard to decipher the streets on paper!).
What to pack: Hunter wellies and a Barbour coat?! An umbrella and layers, Edinburgh is much colder and wetter than you'd expect, sunglasses are also worth it though because of the north sun we get!
Couldn't have done without: Scottish rug.
