How to Survive University in France

  • Be realistic.
  • Determine your goals and prioritise. What do you want out of this year? A degree or the experience of living abroad? If you prefer the former, by all means go for the proper licence but if you prefer to make the most of the year abroad experience, ask whether you can do the diplôme instead.
  • At some unis, taking language classes, sports or any extracurricular activity can count towards your ECTS credits and help you make the pass-mark.
  • Approach your lecturer and/or seminar leader. Most will lend a friendly ear and will sympathise with you. Ask them what they expect during their classes.
  • Don't stick to the Erasmus gang. Make friends with the local students. Your French will definitely improve and you might be lucky enough to get a few hints and/or notes to improve your marks.
