  • The Mole Diaries: Innsbruck

Written by  Sarah Harrison Monday, 23 January 2012

Sarah Harrison, a Modern Languages student studying German, Russian and Dutch at the University of Sheffield, is just coming to the end of her British Council placement in Innsbruck, Austria. Next semester, she'll be heading out to Saint Petersburg to continue her studies! But here, Sarah shares all the insider knowledge she's acquired over her time in Innsbruck: where to find accommodation, picking up the accent, what to pack, and how to make the most of the amazing snow...

  • Week three in Karlsuhe coming up. The last week has been spent finding new hobbies & trying new things, (often with little success), but hey, I'm having fun, speaking German & meeting new people...Long-term accommodation, despite the struggle, is now sorted & I'm well on the way to finding my feet & feeling settled, though the odd skype with friends & family back in England always helps to keep any 'I miss England' moments at bay.

  • Augsburg: The Final Countdown

Written by  Becky Keogh Thursday, 29 September 2011
T minus 3 days until take off… Literally! My flight leaves the UK at 11am Monday morning and it’s all starting to hit home that this time Monday night I’ll be in my empty, probably half-painted apartment, frantically trying to revise the basics of German grammar for my Einstufungstest (placement test) the following morning. The past week has meant many frantic e-mails (the last of which I’ve just finished writing!) to ensure that I can get into my apartment on Monday, despite it being a bank holiday, that I know exactly what’s going on when I arrive in Munich and how on Earth I’m going to live on Monday night until I can get to a supermarket on the Tuesday!
  • Learning Curve

Written by  Becky Keogh Wednesday, 07 September 2011
It’s starting to get closer now. This time in four weeks I’ll hopefully be talking to you all from my flat which I’ll be starting to make my home for the next four months. I decided a while back that with four weeks to go, I’d finally start getting my bum into gear and getting down to the nitty gritty. I don’t think I’ve ever been as organised in my entire life as I have been these past three days! I’ve also learnt a lot this past week. I think it just goes to show that really, you can say you know it all but you never really do.
  • Wherever You Will Go

Written by  Becky Keogh Friday, 26 August 2011

37 days sounds like a lot of time, doesn’t it? Especially when you reflect just how long has gone into planning this whole year. Put into perspective, 37 days is just under half the amount of time I’ll be spending in Moscow next Spring. Yet, no matter how I try and justify it to myself, 37 days feels like barely anything.

For the next 37 days until I go, I’m going to try and fill you in on my rollercoaster several months of preparation, exactly what has gone wrong and how I’ve managed to sort things and get everything back on track. For my first post, let me take you back to the very beginning: how I decided where I was going to spend 7 months of my life.
