Claire Woolly

Studying BA English & Germany at the University of Southampton.

Spending my Year Abroad in the fabulous city of Karlsruhe, BW Germany. Only been out here for a few weeks, & already having a blast working as a Foreign language teaching assistant in a Gymnasium. Surprisingly TEFL is making me realise just how much about English I really don't know, so guess you could say I am successfully managing to improve both languages. Always a plus.

  • This time last year I knew I was coming to Karlsruhe. This time last year, I knew I would be working in Fichte Schule. This time last year, the aforementioned two points were helping, (granted, to a minimal extent) in soothing my ‘oh-pants-I’m-spending-a-year-in-a-completely-unknown-place-where-I-will-be-speaking-a-non-native-language’ jitters. (‘Jitters’ depicting an emotion somewhere in-between terror & excitement. Trepidation, perhaps- yet ‘jitters’ is my preferred term, so let’s stick with that.

  • Week three in Karlsuhe coming up. The last week has been spent finding new hobbies & trying new things, (often with little success), but hey, I'm having fun, speaking German & meeting new people...Long-term accommodation, despite the struggle, is now sorted & I'm well on the way to finding my feet & feeling settled, though the odd skype with friends & family back in England always helps to keep any 'I miss England' moments at bay.

  • 2 days to go until I leave for my teaching induction. Here are one or two reflections of a pre Year Abroad visit to Karlsruhe...
