1. Greece has a population of around 11 million 40% of which live in its capital, Athens.
2. Greek is spoken by around 12 million people worldwide who can mostly be found in Greece, Cyprus and the USA.
3. A high percentage of the English language has roots in Greek. Words include ‘alphabet’ (αλφάβητος) , ‘cardio’ (καρδιά), chronology (χρόνος) and arachnophobia (αράχνη and φόβος)
4. Around 16.5 million tourists visit Greece every year which is higher than the population of the entire country.
5. Feta is the national cheese of Greece and dates back to the Homeric ages. Homer even describes how Feta is made in ‘The Odyssey’!
