If you are travelling on the cheap in San Fran and need a cool place to stay thats inexpensive yet UH-Mazing, then Green Tortoise is definately the place to head for. There are only two so far in the country, one here and in Seattle, but this one is truly brilliant.
Its location is perfect, right on broadway, nestled on a corner next to Chinatown and the Jack Kerouac area of San Fran. Walk 20 paces out the door and you come to the Beat Museum that Kerouac and the Beat generation writers made San Fran famous for.
Walking inside is like moving into a 60s timewarp, the decor, with its diner style booths and tables. The main ballroom has a stage for entertainment, which happens every other night. Therea huge kitchen that provides 3 free meals a week to all travellers- and the payment?? You just have to help out with the cooking, its run by brilliant people who are born and bred san franciscans, they know everything about the city. You can walk pretty much everywhere major from here, we walked from the hostel to fishermans wharf in about 20 mins.
Broadway is a the place for many cool bars and clubs, and has many grocery shops and little attractions within walking distance.
The rooms are homely and secure and the bathrooms are cute and modern. Staying here feels like you're living in a big dorm with a bunch of awesome people. They also organise various tours of San Fran, and have free internet and even a free sauna etc. If heaven was a hostel, this place would be it. I cant quite describe the beauty of this place, everything about it is awesome. You have to go to experience it for yourself, and youll see what I mean, and when you do, shoot me an email!!
