I remember when first arriving the students at the school I work in told me that poetto wasn't the best beach to go to in southern Sardinia, but truth be told you need a car and a strong stomach to drive to any of the breathtaking beaches around here as they are mostly located in the nearby villages, and the roads to get there can sometimes take you on very winding mountainous routes.
Poetto is the longest beach in these parts and still offers a lovely view. Its the most popular, even in October/November, and the most accessible from the city. I would say that the amount of "merchants", if you will, that disturb you with their many carrier bags full of fake goods is very high and sometimes you will be bothered once every 5 minutes which can be unnerving if you go to the beach alone as I discovered for myself. If you can go with company, do, but if not then aim to go only when you know it will be busy.
