    If you have spent a year abroad, the chances are that your language skills are fairly good. Let’s face it, if you didn’t have an interest in the language(s) and culture of your chosen country/ies, you probably would never have bothered going abroad for a year in the first place. Clearly languages are useful in just about every line of work, but have you considered turning your language skills into your main asset?

    Unemployment soars. Recession. Immigration. It’s today’s doom and gloom. And, surely, it’s scary. What would you say if I told you this is in fact good news? That in spite of all the cuts, redundancies and fund drops the economy is actually taking a step forward. Intrigued? Let me explain.

As a year abroader (past or present) with language skills and/or the capacity to feel at home when you're abroad, you could bring international business to any company you chose to work for. You could also search different countries' job markets!

    As I approach the last stage of my internship with the UN and my final few weeks in New York City, I have been trying to establish some good contacts and gain valuable career advice for the future. While the work I have been doing for the Peacekeeping department of the UN has certainly been interesting, the most useful lessons I have learned have definitely come from having an insight into the UN as a whole, the inspirational people I have met and the exciting experience of living in the wonderful city that is New York.

    So, my “holiday” in New York had to end sometime! On Monday I started work at the Policy and Best Practices Section of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the UN. Getting the subway and walking to work that bright, sunny day, passing the Empire State Building and 5th Avenue, was a feeling I’ll never, ever forget.
