Russian Cuisine
Eloise Penman is studying Russian at University College London and will be spending her year abroad 2012-13 in St. Petersburg. Her mother runs a catering business so Eloise has been interested in food and cooking since she was little. Her Year Abroad Project is based on the cuisine of St. Petersburg, so she's going to keep us updated with her research.

She says, "I’d like to show my journey of discovery of how Russian this cuisine actually is, and how much of it reflects the ‘European-centred’ outlook so typical of St. Petersburg. I’ll use my own pictures and experiences to show what Russian cuisine is like nowadays, whence English stereotypes of Russian cuisine originate and where they are mistaken. Ultimately, by the end of my journey, I hope to show how the best and only place to dine Russian-style is in Saint Petersburg."
  • Maslenitsa in Russia

    Tuesday, 16 April 2013

It is now, apparently, Spring in Russia. With Spring comes Maslenitsa. Maslenitsa is a week-long Shrovetide celebration where every day is Pancake Day.

  • Russian Cuisine: Stolovayas

    Monday, 08 October 2012
From the first week to the fifth the Russian-language students of Piter have discovered the stolovaya. Due to the rather noticeable lack of fast-food chains such as McDonalds and KFC (these do exist, yet in much smaller numbers compared with the UK!), I conclude that these canteens are Russia’s answer to a student’s hunger and small budget.
  • My name is Eloise Penman and I’m studying Russian at University College London. I will be in Saint Petersburg, Russia for the duration of the University Year from September 2012.

I’m one of triplets and have a mother who has her own catering (specifically Sugarcraft) business. Naturally, this small army of offspring was drafted into our mother’s business from an early age. My choice was either to reject such a pursuit or love it and fully immerse myself in it. Luckily, I knew what was best for my continuing existence and accepted my role as ‘Private Penman’.

  • Mushrooms, Chocolate and Vodka

    Tuesday, 11 December 2012
It has now been two months since our arrival in the Venice of the North, and it hasn’t been without its culinary surprises. Perhaps the most surprising was the Mushroom Festival in Yuisupovskii Park in early October… We were greeted by a blow-up mushroom, a real camel (of which we, to this day, cannot fathom the meaning) and the sound of the traditional Russian song ‘Katuisha’.
  • Vsem privet! Hi everyone! So, I’ve successfully landed, remembered where I live and even navigated the metro by myself. Clever me. However, this blog isn’t about me, but about Russian cuisine, specifically that of Saint Petersburg!
