  • Puebla

    Saturday, 27 November 2010
    City of the Angels
Puebla, or rather ‘La Ciudad de Los Angeles’ (before LA stole its name), is rooted in the gorgeous plains of Central Mexico, neighboured with the impressive Popocatépetl and La Malinche volcanoes. Known as the fourth largest city in Mexico, Puebla is a force to be reckoned with. Historically important as it was the stop-over for Spanish families between the port of Veracruz and the metropolis of Mexico City, Puebla is awash with colonial buildings and echoes of its Iberian past influences. Talavera, the city’s own take on ceramic tiles, can be found on every street corner within the city centre, whereas if you travel outwards, you’ll come up close to modern buildings, such as Las Animas, a popular shopping centre. Here, both new and old intertwine, with contemporary restaurants rubbing shoulders with folkloric fondas...A city known for its culture, its food and its party atmosphere - a place a student can truly call home from home, for their year abroad.
  • Mexico

    Friday, 12 November 2010
A vast country running across nearly 2 million km², with over 9,000 km of beautiful shoreline, Mexico is a force to be reckoned with. Pyramids, natural beauty, thousands of UNESCO World Heritage sites, great food, a keen party spirit, customs, young and old, picturesque beaches, deserts, cascades, jungles and more...There are few countries in the world that can offer as much as the land of the Aztecs, if you’re talking culture, epic scenery, orgasmic food or idiosyncratic customs.

  • After George Osbourne announced severe cuts to the country budget earlier on in October, the British Council has subsequently suffered a £30m cut to its Language Assistantship fund, which spells real trouble for students planning on teaching during their year abroad in 2011-2012.
  • Running a photography competition for the Year Abroad is something we highly recommend - after all, a little competition for the year abroad can only be a good thing! If anything, it encourages students to really get to know their chosen destination, see it in a different light and capture it an instant. Remembering your year abroad, be it through notes, drawings, videos or photos comes in handy when you want to reminisce over times past (especially as you’re cracking on with finals!). It can also become very useful once you graduate, showing potential employers, students and contemporaries what you achieved when you were out there.
  • ThirdYearAbroad goes on tour!

    Wednesday, 27 October 2010
Lizzie and I have been busy bees travelling across the UK, going up to Scotland and introducing the site to Edinburgh students, getting some posters up in Aberdeen and coming back down to the Midlands, to speak to Birmingham University students back from their time away!
  • Mexico City

    City of ‘organised’ chaos
Mexico City, México or D.F (Distrito Federal) is something totally out of the ordinary – the Mexican megalopolis was built over a lake, thousands of years ago. The Aztecs had decided that they would settle only if they found a cactus, with an eagle holding a snake in its beak (the emblem of the Mexican flag). This image lay before them around the hills of what is now Mexico City, at the very centre of a lake. The ancient civilization thus built over the water to create what locals now refer to as the D.F. An amazing feat, to say the least, as most of it still holds today. Tell-tell signs of what lies beneath the surface can be found around the majestic Cathedral, in the zócalo – part of it is sinking as you read this. A city with more than 25 million people to its name, Mexico City can seem somewhat daunting, daring and darn-right scary at first. Cast your mala onda aside for a minute, and you’ll undoubtedly see why so many choose to make this location home – be it foreigners or locals. Yes, it’s noisy, yes, it’s a little chaotic to say the least, but if you’re looking for a place that has it all, home will be Mexico City. Put your best foot forward, keep your eyes peeled at all times, for better or worse, as you won’t want to miss this...

Thinking about teaching abroad? You're not alone, we've got case studies from students, the lowdown on which schemes to go for and much more! Why not browse our section for tips and tricks on:
  • Studying two languages (or three!) at university generally means you’re entitled to ‘split’ your year abroad, either equally (6 months in each place), or alternatively by placing more importance on one language than another.

    The City

New York really is something else - tall, proud, busy, eccentric, peculiar, fun, vibrant and much, much more. You get this real sense of being a very small fish in an incredibly big pond at first, only to be quickly enamored by its drive, its colours and its sense of anything goes. I managed to travel my way up and down Manhattan, getting a crooked neck from all the gawking at skyscrapers, but I couldn’t help myself as the architecture out here is outstanding. From the very first building of its kind, the Flatiron building, to the more contemporary Trump Tower, you can’t get away from the sense of sheer ambition there is about this place. I loved every second of it, and I can pretty much guarantee that anyone coming here, for a quick trip, short stint or a whole year, will too...
