Week three in Karlsuhe coming up. The last week has been spent finding new hobbies & trying new things, (often with little success), but hey, I'm having fun, speaking German & meeting new people...Long-term accommodation, despite the struggle, is now sorted & I'm well on the way to finding my feet & feeling settled, though the odd skype with friends & family back in England always helps to keep any 'I miss England' moments at bay.

Nothing prepares you for the German they speak in Austria. Having spent my year abroad in Tirol, I now joke I speak Tirolean rather than German because they are two entirely different languages. The first time someone opens their mouth and exclaims “isch mia wurscht” you will wonder where the hell you are and why on earth you chose to come here and you probably won’t figure out the answer to that question until you’re sitting in your first language class back at university and you can understand everything that people say in Hoch Deutsch but they have no understanding of your dialect whatsoever. Understanding Austrian German is a huge advantage for the future and it’s something you just cannot pick up from a textbook.
As a year abroad student, you need language reference tools that are reliable enough to get you through living, studying and working abroad, and portable enough for travel (without affecting your weight restrictions at the airport!). To make sure you have (and can afford!) what you need, we have wangled an exclusive promotional code with Collins and their software partner Ultralingua just for TYA members!
