Saturday, 14 January 2012I’m the first to admit that I wish I’d taken a year abroad. I took a gap year before university, and I went on to use every possible opportunity to travel in uni holidays etc, but it’s not quite the same thing.

Thursday, 03 November 2011Students at QMUL are encouraged to study abroad thanks to the university’s various links to partner universities across the globe. Students of all departments (with the exception of Law, Medicine and Dentistry) are eligible to apply. At QMUL, Modern Language students can choose to work, study or teach abroad as part of the Erasmus scheme. German students can also choose to study or work abroad at independent German institution, checking with their year abroad coordinators first.

University of Leicester
Wednesday, 26 October 2011The university of Leicester offers the chance to go abroad for most of its students. That is to say, you don’t need to be studying Modern Languages to go abroad for a year. Generally speaking, other departments outside of Languages tend to have partner universities across the world for you to spend your year abroad in. Here are their schemes:
- Studying abroad with Erasmus
- Studying abroad if you're not a linguist
- Working abroad on a placement in accordance with the university
- Teaching abroad with the British Council

The importance of a Modern Language degree
Wednesday, 21 September 2011I'm the first to admit that I don't really use my Italian language skills in my job. I'd love to - but I don't. However, that's not to say I don't use what I learnt during my Italian degree every day. My year abroad in Italy and understanding of the language introduced me not only to Italian food, art and culture but to a relaxed, happy approach to life (in the sense that if you enjoy what you do each day, you will get a huge amount out of it) and effectively a new way of thinking, all of which has changed me for the better and is thanks to my language degree.Published in Blog

Wednesday, 26 October 2011The option to study abroad is popular with students at the university of Exeter, across the board. Whether you’re studying Languages or fancy spending a semester or year abroad, there’s loads to choose from.
Modern Language students have 5 options:
- Work as a teaching assistant with the British Council
- Study abroad with Erasmus
- Get an Erasmus work placement
- Go out further afield by checking out partner universities across the globe
- Find a work placement outside of Europe, in accordance with the university's requirements
Students outside of the Modern Languages faculty can get in touch with the International Office to get more information about their options.

University of Aberdeen
Thursday, 20 October 2011At the University of Aberdeen, you can take a year abroad if you are studying from a range of disciplines. Although most commonly associated with Modern Language students, students of Law and other departments can also speak to their course supervisor to check whether they can take a year abroad. There are 3 programmes:
1) International Exchange Programme
2) The Erasmus Programme, particularly aimed at students not studying Modern Languages
3) Studying Abroad as part of your Modern Languages degree (e.g. French)

- Work abroad undertaking a placement
- Study abroad for a few months to a year
- Become a language assistant

Virtual reading: Kindle review
Monday, 19 September 2011Packing for my stay in Mexico, I realised something: aside from the fact I’d have to pick which shoes/dresses/hair products to bring, I’d also have to make a tough decision regarding which literature I could fit (carry) in my two suitcases. Yes, hand luggage was still an option, but my bag was already bulging with my laptop, charger, camera, passport and important documents, a couple of packets of sweets (no Percy Pigs in the airport), my over-filled diary and more clutter I care to recall. What to bring? How do you pick between Molière’s dramatic comedy, Ruiz Zafón’s page-turning novels and Pratchett’s sarcastic fantasy? What about all the other loves in my life, the Arabic classic literature, the socio-economic tirades of South America, the sharp wit of America’s finest authors, or the Renaissance literature of Britain?
